Christmas Lecture: Historic Urban Landscapes and Views in London
Monday 17th December 2007, 6.30-8.30pm, The Gallery, 77 Cowcross Street, London

If cities are seen as landscapes that are shaped by people, they can be read for their strong cultural associations. Hal Moggridge is the representative of the International Federation of Landscape Architects on the UNESCO Historic Urban Landscapes Working Group. He is assembling methodologies which assess our perceptions of place and cultural value and which can be used to inform development in cities across the world. London has never been a city planned with formal views and vistas, but its urban landscape has a strong picturesque character and Hal will discuss how we need to articulate this, and particularly its skyline and views, in order to take informed decisions about change.

ADMISSION: (includes wine & mincepies after the lecture)
ICOMOS-UK Members: £15
Landscape Institute Members: £15
Non-Members £18

Finding the Spirit of Place Symposium, 9th June 2007, Canterbury Cathedral International Study Centre, Canterbury

You are invited to join a joint ICOMOS-UK and ICOMOS International Scientific Committee on Cultural Tourism Symposium on Finding the Spirit of Place. The focus is mainly, but not exclusively, on issues relating to World Heritage sites. International case studies from China, Philippines, Jordan and Australia are complemented by case studies from the UK - Liverpool, Canterbury and Tyntesfield.

This Symposium will explore the idea of spirit of place through the lens of cultural tourism. The first session is an examination of different ways of enhancing the Spirit of Place in a variety of cultural landscapes. The second session investigates how visitors engage with, contribute to or detract from the Spirit of Place. Case studies provide examples of current practice across the world as well the UK. These present a platform for delegates to investigate and discuss the effectiveness of various conservation and interpretation frameworks and management decisions.

As a group of conservation and tourism professionals we will consider the benefits and disbenefits of the impacts of cultural tourism – and in particular mass tourism - on conservation planning & practice; site management & operational planning; interpretive planning; community histories & heritage; and the visitor experience.

Members: £40

Non-Members: £60

Climate Change and Cultural Heritage: Society's Great Challenge, 7th of December at 6.30pm, The Gallery, Cowcross Street, London EC1M

Society cannot ignore climate change – its impacts are already being felt. The impact on the environment and economy is now widely and sometimes dramatically forecast. Less discussed is the impact of climate change on cultural heritage – historic buildings, gardens, farmed landscapes – and the cultural and social processes associated with them. But these impacts will be no less drastic and could be felt right across society.

In this timely lecture, in the light of the Stern Report, Fiona Reynolds, Director-General of the National Trust, will speak on how the Trust is learning to adapt to climate change and mitigate its worst effects on cultural heritage. She will also address the need for all of us to call on Government to deliver a robust and targeted climate change strategy.

Members: £15
Non-Members: £18
Students: £10

Admission includes wine & mincepies after the lecture.
